Often referred to as ‘The Deep South’ the Invercargill area offers a diverse range of tourist attractions such as Heritage Trails including Cultural and Heritage Museums, Antique Aircraft Museum with a working restoration facility, Maritime Museum and one of the largest private vintage Truck Collections in the world. We also have Art Galleries, Scenic drives including the Southern Scenic Route , Bird Watching, Burt Munro Displays, Tuatara breeding program, Botanic Gardens, a private 25 acre world class garden and the southern most 18 links Golf Course in the world.
We have short walks from 15 minutes to four hours and in Western Southland we have New Zealand’s newest walk the Hump Ridge Track a 3 day trek taking in some of the most incredible vistas that Southern Fiordland can offer. The Wairaurahiri Jet would be among our Top 5 Must Do’s in Southland an exciting ride on grade three rapids that drop 600 ft to the sea. Southland has some of the best trout fishing in New Zealand. For the fisherman touring in Southland area we can arrange self guided tours from the lodge or arrange a fishing guide. On top of all that we have Stewart Island a 20 minute flight or 1 hour Ferry crossing from Bluff. From Stewart Island take a 10 minute, water taxi to Ulva Island a predator free Bird Sanctuary or you can try personalized fishing charters, bird watching tours, view the marine life from a glass bottom boat. There are so many more opportunities here to explore and enjoy.
Invercargill is known as the friendly city and home of Burt Munro, one of New Zealand’s national Heroes. On the 26th August 1967 Burt claimed the World Record Class S-A 1000cc motor cycle class on Bonneville Salt flats USA with an average speed of 183.586mph . He was riding a modified 1920 Indian Scout and aged 68. ‘The World’s Fastest Indian’ is a film about Burt Munro’s life, starring Antony Hopkins, shot here in Invercargill in 2005. Highly Recommended!
